Must Know O Level Chemistry Answering Techniques.

Scoring well in O Level Chemistry is not just about knowing the content.

A lot of students lose marks because they do not answer in the way the question demands. They may know the topic. They may even understand it during revision. But when it comes to writing the answer, key words get left out, the structure is weak, or they explain the wrong thing.

That is why some students keep getting stuck at B4, C5 or C6 even though they are studying hard.

Here are some of the answering techniques we constantly emphasise in class because they make a real difference to how students score.

1. Use SPFE when explaining physical properties

When a question asks about melting point, boiling point, electrical conductivity, or solubility, many students write vague explanations and lose marks.

A much safer way is to use SPFE:

  • S – Structure
  • P – Particles
  • F – Forces
  • E – Energy

This gives students a clear way to organise their answer.

Example:

Why does magnesium oxide have a higher melting point than sodium chloride?

Magnesium oxide has a giant ionic structure consisting of Mg²⁺ and O²⁻ ions.
The electrostatic forces of attraction between the ions are stronger because the ions have higher charges compared to Na⁺ and Cl⁻ in sodium chloride.
More heat energy is needed to overcome these stronger forces.

A lot of students know that MgO has a higher melting point, but they do not explain it in a way that earns full marks. Structure matters.

2. For energy changes, always compare bonds broken and bonds formed

This is another area where students often stop too early.

They write something like, “The reaction is exothermic,” and leave it there. That is usually not enough.

What the answer needs is a comparison.

Better structure:

  • Energy is absorbed to break bonds in the reactants.
  • Energy is released when new bonds are formed in the products.
  • Compare the two.
  • Then conclude whether the reaction is exothermic or endothermic.

Example:

Energy absorbed to break bonds in the reactants is less than the energy released when bonds are formed in the products.
Hence, the enthalpy change is negative, so the reaction is exothermic.

That comparison is what gets the mark.

3. In collision theory, do not forget the word “effective”

Many students write, “There are more collisions,” and think that is enough.

Usually, it is not.

The key idea is not just that particles collide more often. It is that there is a higher frequency of effective collisions.

Example:

Increasing temperature increases the kinetic energy of the particles.
The particles move faster and collide more frequently, resulting in a higher frequency of effective collisions.

That one word — effective — is often the difference between getting the mark and missing it.

4. If the question says “use the data”, quote the data

This is a very common mistake.

If the question gives a table, graph, or set of values and says “refer to the information above” or “use the data”, students must actually quote the data in their answer.

Do not just describe the trend vaguely.

Better:

  • “At 40°C, the rate was 0.012 mol/min…”
  • “The Rf value is 0.45, which matches substance X…”
  • “As shown in the graph, the volume increased from 20 cm³ to 35 cm³…”

If the data is there, use it.
Otherwise, the answer often feels incomplete.

5. Do not leave out state symbols when they are needed

This especially matters in ionic equations.

Students may get the substances correct, but still lose marks because the state symbols are missing or wrong.

Example:

Zn (s) + Cu²⁺ (aq) → Zn²⁺ (aq) + Cu (s)

This looks like a small thing, but in Chemistry, small things matter.

6. Do not explain when the question did not ask you to

This one catches a lot of students out.

If the question says state, then state.
Do not turn it into an explanation question.

The more extra words students add, the more chances they create for themselves to say something inaccurate and lose the mark.

Example:

If the question says:
State the colour change observed

A correct answer may simply be:
Blue to colourless

That is enough.

Adding extra explanation is not always helpful. Sometimes it just creates risk.

Final thought

O Level Chemistry is not only about content knowledge. It is also about answering with precision.

A student can study hard, understand the topic, and still lose marks because the phrasing is off, the structure is weak, or a key term is missing. That is why answering technique matters so much.

This is also why simply doing more practice papers is not always enough. Students need to know what the examiner is looking forhow marks are awarded, and how to phrase answers properly.
