Chemistry is one of those subjects where students can study quite hard and still not see the marks move.
Not always because they are lazy. Not always because they do not know the content.
Very often, they are just making the same few mistakes over and over again.
These are some of the most common ones we see in Sec 3 and Sec 4 O Level Chemistry students.
1. Memorising Without Really Understanding
A lot of students treat Chemistry like a memory subject. They try to memorise definitions, trends, and model answers, hoping the same thing will come out in the exam. Sometimes that works for a while. But once the question changes slightly, they get stuck.
That is because O Level Chemistry is not just about recall. It is about knowing how to apply what you know.
Why this causes problems
In structured questions and data-based questions, students need to explain, compare, predict, and apply. Pure memorisation breaks down very quickly when the context changes.
What helps instead
Students need to understand the logic behind the topic. For example, instead of just memorising that chlorine is more reactive than iodine, they should understand why — smaller atomic radius, stronger attraction for an incoming electron, and therefore a greater tendency to gain electrons.
Once the logic is clear, the answer becomes much easier to apply.
2. Poor Answering Technique
This is one of the biggest reasons students lose marks. They may know the idea, but they do not phrase it properly. They miss key words, skip steps, or write too vaguely. In Chemistry, that matters a lot.
Why this causes problems
The marking scheme is often precise. Students do not just need the correct idea — they need the correct wording, structure, and level of detail.
What helps instead
Students need to learn how to answer in a way that matches the demands of the question. That includes things like:
- Using SPFE for physical property explanations
- Comparing bond breaking and bond forming for energy changes
- Quoting data when the question says to refer to the information given
- Knowing when to explain, and when to just state the answer

3. Weak Mole Concepts
Mole calculation questions are a major problem area for many students. Usually, it is not because the questions are impossibly hard. It is because the fundamentals are shaky. Students confuse formulas, mix up units, or do not know which relationship to use.
Why this causes problems
Once the foundation is weak, even simple questions start to feel confusing. When students panic, they often apply the wrong formula to the wrong situation.
What helps instead
Students need to be secure in the core mole relationships first:
- mole = mass ÷ Mr
- mole = gas volume ÷ 24 dm³
- mole = number of particles ÷ Avogadro constant
- mole = concentration × volume
More importantly, they need to know when to use each one, and how to move from one step to the next without guessing.
4. Neglecting Qualitative Analysis and Practical Topics
A lot of students spend most of their time on theory and calculations, then leave practical topics until the very end. That is a mistake.
Topics like qualitative analysis, gas tests, and planning questions are not optional extras. They are part of the paper, and they cost marks when students are not prepared.
Why this causes problems
Students may know the content in theory, but still struggle when they have to identify observations, describe test results, or plan an investigation clearly.
What helps instead
Students need repeated exposure to:
- Gas tests
- Ion identification
- Common observations
- Planning and practical-based questions
They also need to get used to writing what they observe, not what they think should happen.
That is one reason practical support matters so much. If students have barely handled the equipment before Paper 3, confidence drops very quickly.
5. Starting Revision Too Late
This one sounds obvious, but it happens every year. Students leave revision until the last few weeks, then try to cram the whole subject at once — relying on summaries, spotting topics, or a burst of panic-mugging just before the paper. That usually does not end well.
Why this causes problems
Chemistry topics build on one another. If earlier ideas are weak, later topics become harder. Last-minute revision can help with recall, but it does not usually fix weak understanding or poor answering habits.
What helps instead
Students do much better when revision is built up steadily over time. A simple rhythm works better:
- Revise each topic after it is taught
- Do targeted practice while the chapter is still fresh
- Come back to older topics regularly
- Use concise summary notes to refresh key ideas quickly
This is where structured resources and weekly review help a lot.
Final Thought
A lot of students do not need to study more. They need to stop making the same mistakes.
Once the content is clearer, the answering improves, and the weak spots are fixed properly, Chemistry starts to feel a lot more manageable.
