Transitioning from Primary to Secondary Science can feel like a shock—for both students and parents. Many students who did well in PSLE Science begin to lose confidence in Sec 1 or Sec 2, even though they still appear hardworking.
So, what’s going on?
The Key Differences That Catch Students Off Guard
- Questions become less familiar and more open-ended.
Instead of straightforward recall, students now face questions that ask them to apply knowledge in unfamiliar scenarios.
- Marking becomes stricter.
While Primary School answers could sometimes be forgiven for small slips, Lower Sec Science—especially in Sec 1 and Sec 2—requires precise phrasing, the right keywords, and logical sequencing. Students can know the right ideas and still lose marks.
- Explanations must show reasoning, not just facts.
Secondary questions often require students to justify their thinking, not just state what they know. This shift from factual recall to structured reasoning can throw students off.
How Parents Can Support the Transition
- Review marked papers with your child to identify how and why marks were lost—not just whether the answer was right or wrong.
- Encourage your child to practice written explanations, especially for questions that involve cause-and-effect or comparisons.
- Shift the focus from “just study harder” to “study smarter”—with guidance on how to answer.
