It’s one of the most common complaints we hear from parents:

“My child knows the topic… but still loses marks.”

More often than not, it comes down to this:

Their answers aren’t structured in a way that examiners can reward.

What Does “Structured Answering” Actually Mean?

  1. Clarity of thought

A good answer follows a logical flow—from definition to explanation to conclusion.

  1. Precision in language

Using the correct keywords matters. In some cases, missing or misusing one term can cost the entire mark.

  1. Addressing all parts of the question

Many students answer only part of the question or miss the intent behind it. That’s often where marks are lost.

Common Mistakes That Lead to Lost Marks

  • Giving the right idea, but in vague language
  • Mixing up key terms (e.g., heat vs. temperature)
  • Not supporting answers with reasoning (especially for ‘Explain’ or ‘Compare’ questions)

What Can Be Done?

  • Guide your child to break down the question before answering.
  • Practise with model answers that show how to phrase clearly.
  • Teach them to always recheck: “Did I answer every part of the question?”

At The Classroom, our Lower Secondary Science tuition doesn’t just focus on content. We show Sec 1 and Sec 2 students how to write answers that score.

We’ve created a Lower Sec Science Revision Kit that includes sample structured answers, common mistakes, and examiner tips. It’s free for all students who join our Trial Class this month.

📍 Perfect for Sec 1 and Sec 2 Science students who want to turn understanding into real marks.
